Fluency is the foundation of confident reading. When students read accurately and smoothly, their cognitive energy is freed for understanding. At Ascend Reading Lab, students engage in structured, guided fluency practice designed to improve pacing, expression, and accuracy. As fluency strengthens, comprehension becomes more accessible and less overwhelming.
Vocabulary – Strengthen Academic Language
Strong readers understand the words they encounter. Our instruction includes explicit vocabulary development focused on academic language, word meaning, and morphology. Rather than relying on memorization, students learn how words work — building the tools they need to decode unfamiliar vocabulary independently.
Comprehension – Develop Strategic Thinking
Comprehension is not guesswork — it is a skill. Students are taught how to approach text strategically through guided questioning, discussion, and evidence-based responses. We focus on identifying key ideas, analyzing text structure, and supporting answers with textual evidence. Over time, students develop the confidence and thinking skills necessary to engage with increasingly complex texts.
